Filip Andjelkovic is a PhD candidate whose research draws on Freudian psychoanalysis and the critical theory of the Frankfurt School. His broader focus is on the social and psychological transformations effected by developments in visual culture, and his SSHRC-funded thesis specifically examines how technologies of ubiquitous connectivity and digital mediation harbour an unconscious and unrealized ideal of omnipotence. Filip's project interrogates issues such as the representation of technological monstrosity, the authenticity of the deepfaked image, and the algorithms which structure online social networks. His work questions the extent to which responsible engagement with visual media is possible within systems of communication which are not only motivated by, but programmed to adhere to, impossible dreams of manipulation and control.
