Biography

Ian Greer is a doctoral student in the Department for the Study of Religion, specializing in Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir). He completed his BA at McGill University with a double major in Political Science and Urban Studies, and then an MA at the American University in Cairo in Arabic and Islamic Studies. His MA thesis on the writings of Ḥasan al-ʿAṭṭār (1766–1835) was awarded the 2024 George T. Scanlon Award for the best thesis in the AUC's Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations during the previous two years. At the DSR, his research focuses on Qur'anic commentaries of the 19th century.
