Celebrating spring 2026 achievements for PhD candidate Oluwatobiloba Michael Ajayi

April 16, 2026 by Siri Hansen

Currently a 2025-26 Connaught "PhDs for Public Impact" Fellow, Oluwatobiloba Michael Ajayi's doctoral work investigates the intersections of religion, ethnicity, and politics in Africa, exploring how identity is strategically mobilized during elections and how these dynamics influence civic belonging and democratic participation in postcolonial contexts. The spring of 2026 has brought much for him to celebrate, with the award of a prestigious fellowship in Germany and Poland, being selected to participate in the Spring School on Science, Religion and Health in Barcelona, and admittance as a Junior Fellow at Massey College. Reflecting on these successes, Ajayi sums up how he is feeling as this year unfolds: "Grateful for the momentum. Encouraged for what lies ahead."

FASPE graphicThe Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) is an intensive two-week program in ethical leadership that challenges participants to "critically examine constructs, current developments and issues that raise ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings in which they work." While Ajayi is among 14 fellows selected from rising scholars globally under the Clergy cohort, his work situates him within the broader category of religious scholar and leader, contributing interdisciplinary perspectives from religion, politics, and society. "Being selected is humbling and energizing," he says. "I'm looking forward to engaging in an exceptional international community of scholars committed to advancing rigorous conversations on religion, ethics, and political responsibility in contemporary societies."

The program takes place in Berlin, Germany and Krakow, Poland, in June 2026. Fellows participate in intensive seminars examining how ethical reasoning is shaped in contexts marked by political rupture, historical trauma, and democratic uncertainty. The fellowship situates contemporary scholarship within deeper reflection on responsibility, leadership, and the role of critical inquiry in shaping public life.

Shortly after learning of his FASPE success, Ajayi was notified that he had been selected to attend the Spring School on Science, Religion and Health in Barcelona, to be held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in May. "Receiving another funded academic opportunity so soon [after FASPE] was especially significant," Ajayi noted. "I am grateful for these back-to-back affirmations of the relevance of my research at the intersection of religion, politics, and society. These opportunities strengthen my commitment to studying how moral frameworks, institutional structures, and religious identities shape public life across different contexts." The Spring School focuses on equipping early-career researchers with robust theoretical and methodological bases for examining the tangled boundaries of science, religion and health. The program is organized around lectures from prominent scholars and the presentation by participants to small groups of their own research, as well as providing opportunities to interact with established scholars.

Massey College logoRounding off these two wonderful achievements, Ajayi has been invited to join Massey College as a Junior Fellow for the 2026-27 academic year. The purpose of the college community is to provide an environment where all members can expand their horizons academically, socially, and culturally. A caring and inclusive community provides well-being, peer support, and networking and mentoring opportunities. This admission to Massey "is both humbling and deeply motivating," says Ajayi. "To be welcomed into a community shaped by excellence in research, public thought, and interdisciplinary dialogue is a meaningful affirmation of the work I care deeply about and the scholarly path I continue to pursue." He expressed gratitude to his doctoral committee [Simon Coleman, Kamari Maxine Clark, Ato Kwamena Onoma], too, for their "steady supoort, mentorship and commitment to my development as a scholar."

The DSR community is proud of these successes and looks forward to seeing what comes next!
