Description

The symposium includes a panel discussion in the morning (from 10:00 am) and a roundtable discussion in the afternoon (from 2:00 pm).

Examining the intersections of Buddhism, healing, and modernity in the Sri Lankan and broader South Asian context, the symposium brings together scholars to explore how contemporary Buddhist life is being reshaped through encounters with global religious and economic transformations. The event considers, with particular attention to the growing presence of Pentecostal and nondenominational ministries, how Buddhists navigate multiple—and sometimes competing—frameworks of healing, legitimacy, and spiritual authority.

Moderators: Department for the Study of Religion faculty members Frances Garrett and Rory Lindsay

Organizer: Geethika Dharmasinghe, Department for the Study of Religion Postdoctoral Fellow
