t for Historical Studies at UTM and the Multi-Faith Centre at UTSG togethe
r with the Department for the Study of Religion are excited to present a v
irtual talk with Mallika Kaur on her recent book 'Faith, Gender, and Act
ivism in the Punjab Conflict: The Wheat Fields Still Whisper.' Faith, Gen
der, and Activism in the Punjab Conflict: The Wheat Fields Still WhisperP
unjab was the arena of one of the first major armed conflicts of post-colo
nial India. During its deadliest decade 1984-1994, as many as 250,000 pe
ople were killed. This book makes an urgent intervention in the history of
the conflict, which to date has been characterized by a fixation on sens
ational violence—or ignored altogether. Mallika Kaur unearths the life sto
ries of extraordinary people who found themselves at the center of Punjab'
s hazardous human rights movement. Braiding oral histories, community his
tory going back to 1839, personal snapshots, and primary documents recov
ered from at-risk archives, Kaur shows that when entire conflicts are mar
ginalized, we miss essential stories: stories of faith, feminist action\
, and the power of citizen-activists.https://punjabconflict.orgBio: Mallik
a Kaur is a lawyer and writer who focuses on human rights, with a special
ization in gender and minority issues. She received her BA from University
of Chicago; Master in Public Policy from Harvard University, and her Ju
ris Doctorate from the UC Berkeley School of Law, where she currently tea
ches skills-based and experiential social justice classes. To register, pl
